The genus consists of 13 species out of which six native in North America, one in Mexico and six to Eurasia. The common horse chestnut, which is known in our country, Hungary, originates from Asia Minor and the Balkan Peninsula. The flowers bloom late April or early May. They are used in folk medicine as a drug against rheumatic pains - tea made from horse chestnut flowers should be drunk in such cases.
