In its natural habitat (from Honshu to Kyushu, Japan) this plant can grow into a gigantic tree, in an extreme case, can reach even a height of 64 metres and a trunk of 7 metres in diameter! Generally, it will be about 20 to 30 metres tall in its old age, the young trunk is smooth, fibrous, then ribbed and the colour is brownish-reddish. The scattered positioned awl shaped leaves are curved sickle-like toward the sprout shaft. In the Far East, it is not only important as an ornamental plant, but also as a forestry species because its wood is soft, lightweight and has good resistance to moisture. In Japan, China and New Zealand this tree is liked to afforest, so there are vast, covered areas in these countries, but it is tried in England and to the south of the Caucasus too. It could be planted in our country (Hungary) as well, it would grow quite nicely in places with more favourable conditions. A few kilometres away from our nursery, in the yard of one of the neighbouring villages (Szőkéd), you can see a beautiful, vigorous specimen of about 10 metres tall, with deep green foliage! When it is young, it reminds us of a pine tree; a very decorative plant radiating a unique atmosphere. There are a number of known variations. USDA Zone 5a
