It is one of the world`s most famous, most popular and high-yielding sort of asparagus for consumption! Its medium thick green whistles can be collected in early spring, in mid-March, and the collection period can last over two months! Among the several sorts, which are well known and being in cultivation, it has by far the finest taste! Stewed in butter results in a heavenly dessert! Do not cut sprouts in the first year so as to become stronger - although we cannot help anyway to taste at least 1-2 threads of it…!
It prefers loose, airy, well-drained, nutrient-rich soil in a sunny location. Spreading shrubs of approx. 90 cm in height can grow and produce this regal vegetable even up to 10 years (according to some people it is a caviar of vegetables!). It can be propagated easily by root-dividing, is a hardy perennial plant. Gijnlim is a pollinating plant, so if you want to catch its seeds, female ones must be planted nearby.
