It is the widely known strawberry tree, which predilection used to be planted beside roads, and it provided the traveller some shade and fruit. The fruit can be white and black alike! Thick-trunked, broad, rounded crowned, massive specimens can still be seen in many places. Its fruit is also liked by domestic animals, so it is worth planting at a place where available to them! The wood is precious, beautiful yellow in colour, one known use is for barrel production (to brandy, etc.), but is first class as firewood too. When young, it grows rapidly, is not choosy in soils, the Hungarian climate and soil characteristics are simply ideal for it! Although silk production has virtually been ceased in Hungary, we should not forget that the leaves are the silkworm`s diet! The Chinese silk was one of the most precious commodity a few centuries ago!
