It is native to the southern mountainous parts of Brazil, but can be found even at altitudes of 1000-1200 metres. Its frost resistance is superior to that of Butia capitata (Jelly Palm): for a short period of time it withstands -12 °C! The seeds are surrounded by orange-red coloured edible fruit pulp which has a pleasant mixed orange-pineapple flavour!
