This is a pinnate leaved palm, growing up to 7-8 m tall, native to the middle highlands of Brazil. Its frost resistance is one of the best amongst the pinnate leaved palms, it survives a shorter time (1-2 days) of frost period, down to about -10 °C, easily! Pieces, which have been standing in parks, botanical gardens and private gardens for more decades, on the shores of the lakes Garda, Lago Maggiore, Lugano or Como, which are lining up at the foot of the Southern Alps, are very good evidences. The seeds are surrounded by orange coloured edible fruit pulp which has a pleasant mixed orange-pineapple flavour and contains β-carotene and provitamin A! (The Butia eriospatha allegedly tastes finer...) USDA zone 8a
