Virginian Juniper

(Juniperus virginiana )
This plant is currently unavailable.

It can be found in a huge area in the US, (in 37 states). This species is primarily native to the Atlantic or Eastern areas, usually occurs in dry highlands, many times in rocky, stony or calcareous soils. In its native land it is called Eastern Red-Cedar. Normally, it is a closed-cone-shaped columnar tree, which grows as a bigger bush in habitats where the soil contains less nutrient, but under optimal conditions, it can reach 30 meters tallness and a trunk diameter of one metre. The foliage is mainly showy grey-green. Because of its valuable wood, it is held in high esteem, cultivated in forestry including Christmas trees (in the USA!), and processed vast amounts of them (e.g. pencils). It is available for both fence-posts and outdoor structures because of its durability as well as used indoors with predilection owing to its pretty pink shade and a pleasant, aromatic fragrance. This wood is excellent for making wardrobes and cupboards because its scent deters moths. It is a highly hardened and tolerant species, so it should be more widely spread in our country too, not only in America. It is suitable for wind deflector strips, anti-erosion protection and planting trees in places of less quality soils. Small mammals and birds love to consume its ash-blue, later blackish coloured cone-berries. Besides lots of benefits, it is wonderful as an ornamental plant as well, in addition, it is one of the best stocks to graft junipers in graft nurseries.

It is excellent to establish hedges!
