Tea Shrub, Chinese Camellia

(Camellia sinensis)
7 950 Ft

It is a pure white flowered shrub with shiny evergreen foliage. Its shoot tip close leaves are used to make the well-known refreshing tea brew. This plant likes acidic, completely lime-free soil, so keeping in a container is recommended. This fact is important because the plant is not hardy though an open field cultivation can be tried at a very sheltered place. (The tea plantation from the Stalin’s era near Munkács, which we were lucky to visit, is famous. There was a real outdoor cultivation of tea here, but our guide said that the plants had been protected from freezing by the falling snow at least half a meter thick every winter. This plantation has now almost vanished, a ca. 15-20 meters high of forest has grown above, the plants are just languishing at the bottom and here and there even the rows are discernible!
