The New Zealand flax sorts are slow-growing, hardened, much-tolerant, extremely spectacular container plants! There are one-colour-leafed varieties with green, reddish-brown or purplish-black foliage and some varieties with different bright colours, for example cream-white, yellow, pink, red or purple striped leaf versions! In addition, significant differences can be seen between the sizes of certain varieties, however the height of the mature individuals is usually around 1 meter! (Almost the same width as well!) Thanks to this eye-catching diversity, these tough plants - either alone or together with other container plants - can be wonderful ornaments on the balcony, terrace or in a part of a garden around the house! They especially look good either with the giant-leaved bananas or in the company of feijoa, eucalyptus, oleander, nightshade, bougainvillea etc.!
Wintering is super simple because they easily survive minus 5-6 degrees of centigrade without problems, so an unheated summer kitchen, press house, garage, a lighter basement, etc. is perfectly suitable for wintering. They also stand if their soil sometimes dries up, so they can be left without `supervision` for many weeks in winter!
Any sort of genus Phormium is definitely recommended for container plant lovers!
