It is a Canadian sort of serviceberry, similar to the blue blueberries, produces high-quality fruit! The fruits ripen relatively simultaneously in July, they are pleasantly sweet, relatively large in size: 0.5 inch (12-13 mm) in diameter! The importance of this variety is illustrated by the fact that the Smoky version occupies 85% of the Canadian plantations! Although the fruit consumed raw is enjoyable, but can also be processed in many different ways: can be jam, dried, cakes, fruit juice, syrup, wine, liqueurs or brandy ...
The plant grows 9.8-13 feet (3-4 m) tall, large shrub or a small multi-branched tree, which can live up to 70 years old as well! In April, besides the mass of white flowers decorate the surroundings, it is an excellent honey-bee pasture too. It is perfectly winter-hardy, not soil-picky and tolerates drier summers well, but occasional watering is advisable to encourage good fruit production.
Serviceberries are being discovered in our country these days, but our own experience also strengthen that this fruit is facing a great future and has a high pleasure-value!
