Simla` Himalayan Cedar, Deodar Cedar K6

(Cedrus deodara `Simla` K6)
This plant is currently unavailable.

When grown up, it is a slender pyramidal or conical-shaped tree, the branches are thinner and dipping, the peak is nodding, but otherwise, it grows very nice straight. It has a bloomy-bluish tinged foliage, the fresh shoots are light, soft, arcuately dipping. This is an extremely impressive-looking, beautiful tree, which feels great under the Hungarian soil and climatic conditions! The specimens, which we planted, have grown about 1 metre every year after the third year regardless of the amount of rainfall! The seeds of the plants offered here were collected by Zsolt Debreczy, from the Simla Pass (at the altitude of 2800 m!!!), State Himachal Pradesh, in the north-western part of India, which is one of the most inhospitable habitat for the Himalayan cedar!!! As originated from a harsh habitat, the great perseverance of the sort Simla was expected to the domestic (Hungarian) circumstances and the beautiful developing of more dozens of specimens planted in Egerág has amply proved it too! During the 2011-2012 winter, they virtually survived unscathed the long time lasting cold of minus 25 degrees on the upper side of the hill as well.

USDA zone 6a

We welcome those who are interested to visit the Simla cedars in our Egerág estate, where we planted a line of about 100 meters long of this wonderful sort! These trees have already been approaching the height of 4 meters!

There is an approx. 200-year-old gigantic specimen Cedrus deodara in the park of the stately home in Iharosberény. The wood of this species is highly durable, water and dry resistant, therefore, it has major forestry importance in India (the homeland of Cedrus deodara), but it is also planted for this purpose elsewhere. Nothing explains why it is neglected together with Lebanon and Atlas cedars (and of course, several other stately evergreens as well) in our public parks. It seems that our chief town-gardeners cannot give up the `noble tradition` of planting some ordinary hardwood species or a few common shrubs, practically belonging to the weed-category, in the name of landscaping! This tree may not be missed in larger gardens! It is the picturesque row of trees in access roads, manors and scenic walkways!
