 Growing to 10-15-metre tall, a laminar-ribbed, evergreen tree which has soft spongy bark. The bark of this plant provides the cork for the market. The plantation grown cork oaks are peeled in every 8th year; at such an occasion, a tree is able to give 15.75-23.6 stone (100-150 kg) of cork bark. At young age, just on the basis of the leaves, it can easily be mistaken for a holm-oak. In a hard winter the tree may behave as a deciduous. Due to its unique bark and evergreen foliage, it is very popular ornamental tree. It is worth planting at a sheltered place in our country (Hungary).  USDA Zone 7a.
