Mistral Pohutukawa

(Metrosideros hybrid `Mistral`)
This plant is currently unavailable.

It is a tree endemic to New Zealand where it has cultic significance among the Maori people because they think the soul of the dead Maori will get to the ocean through the roots of this tree, the scene of his long boat travel. Long, crimson, button-like flowers start opening in its original home at the end of December, hence the nickname New Zealand Christmas tree. Like the oleander, it can also be kept in a container excellently. Breathtakingly gorgeous while blooming!
The wonderful sort Mistral is of hybrid origin, which was created by natural crossbreeding of Metrosideros excelsa and Metrosideros robusta. Of stockier stature, slower growing and the inflorescences are deeper-toned crimson.
