Its breeder Alex J. Zebehazy introduced it in Ohio, the USA, 1984, who produced it by crossing Leucothoe fontanesiana (Highland Doghobble) and Leucothoe axillaris (Coastal Doghobble). This is a healthy, stocky growing species with beautiful foliage colour and very good winter-hardy! Its leaves are of burgundy colour when come alive, dark olive-green in summer and turn to crimson in autumn! The plant can reach 70 cm tallness and 1 meter in width when matured, and can grow very well both in a shady and in a sunny place. Its white flower-clusters are not too spectacular, however, they take away a lot of energy from the plant so some authors recommend removal of the flowering shoots for a richer, more robust growth.
The plant`s winter-hardiness is very good, it has proved of tolerating -26 C° as well! It requires slightly acidic soil, and is perfect for keeping it in a big flower-pot or container!
