This common garden barberry is actually a hybrid between Berberis darwinii (Darwin`s Barberry) and Berberis empetrifolia (Crow Barberry), both South-American species. An evergreen medium sized shrub prized for its graceful arching habit and display of orange - yellow, scented spring blossom. Ideal as informal hedge or screen at rear of bed. Spiney growth can deter unwanted visitors! 3m tall x 2.5m wide. It has narrow mucronate (spiny tip) leaves which have distinct revolute (inrolled) margins underneath like B. empetrifolia and golden yellow flowers which are similar in shape to B. darwinii and distinctly fragrant. It will flourish in most well drained soils, tolerating all (even poor sand or heavy clay) but the poorest of soils. Plant in full sun for best foliage and flowering. Berberis is fully hardy - tolerating exposed locations. Prune to shape in spring - removing older wood to base. Suitable for container growing, hedging or topiary.
