It is a tall-growing ornamental tree, native to East Asia (China, Korea, Japan, Taiwan) and at mature age it can be taller than 15 metres. The main jewels are its 30 cm long clusters consisting of 1 cm red berries, which, depending on the local bird population, can remain on the trees even until the end of winter. Some birds are fond of these berries very much, especially in the lean winter days. They are also available as human nourishment, but do not offer special dining experience... The tree is dioecious, so to have seeds, a male and a female plant is also required. The palm-sized leaves are bronze-red in colour, later they turn into shiny dark-green and sit on long red leaf-stalks! The underside parts of the leaves have bluish-white colour! The foliage remains almost the same green colour till the autumn fall of leaves and takes a slight yellowish tint only at the last minute. The red berry clusters are already very showy themselves in the green foliage, but what mass decorates the tree can only be seen after the leaves have fallen! Blooming takes place in midsummer and though the flowers are relatively insignificant, yellowish-green, they have pleasant scent! It is a completely winter-hardy tree, not soil-picky, which is missing from the domestic choice and it is completely inexplicable!
