It is a slow-growing ornamental tree which reaches only 2-3 metres in tall over 30 years. In spring and early summer the leaves are coloured in vivid fiery red. The leaves preserve their excellent bright colour in hot sunshine too. The autumn foliage glows in scarlet and crimson, it is an impressive spectacle!
The young plants kept in shade have not, but the ones which are more advanced, also receiving some sunshine, growing half in shadow, in diffuse light, developing nicely, however, have the typical hues at full intensity! The Japanese maples are completely hardy in our country (Hungary). They grow really well in a vaporous, semi-shady area with good water supply. They especially look good near smaller and larger ponds, or at any water surface! USDA zone 6a.
