The European Cypress is native to southern Europe and the Mediterranean region, where several variants occur. For example, the most ancient form with spreading crown consisting of wide, thick branches, can be seen in Crete. In the southern parts of Europe the leaner, column-like shape is far more favoured since ancient times, the gardeners preferred these specimens when planted, so this is the most common shape nowadays.
It is not choosy in soil, is a drought-resistant, fast-growing conifer, which can be successfully brought up in a large part of the territory of our country (Hungary) too! Only the real frost-nooks and cool, moist, shady places are not for this plant. It feels the best on south-facing slopes most exposed to the sun all day, or perhaps planted on the south side of large buildings!
It will evolve into an amazing, 1 to 2 metres wide and just like 15 metres tall, dark-green column!
A beautiful hedgerow of Mediterranean atmosphere can also be brought out of it!
