Bugleweed, also known as bugle or carpet bugle, is a low-growing perennial groundcover that thrives in shady places. Bugleweed spreads by means of leafy runners which set out rosettes of leaves, soon forming a thick mat. In late May or June bugleweed sends up spikes of flowers about 20 centimeters high and transforms the green (or red, etc!-depending on the variety) carpet into a sea of bumble-bee-attracting blue for a few weeks. Mow or trim the spent flower stems back and the carpet will stay neat and regrow quickly.
