Betula pendula 'Fastigiata' (Columnar Silver Birch)

(Betula pendula 'Fastigiata')
This plant is currently unavailable.

This tree has an unusual growth habit, the branches intertwine with each other and grow inwards thus producing an erect habit. The papery, silvery-white bark exfoliates in sheets, the contorted, twisted branches create an interesting effect in winter. The leaves have a serrated edge and change from green to yellow in autumn. An adaptable, fantastic specimen tree, with a narrowly ovate, columnar habit. Can also be used in parks and gardens and to line driveways. Moderately growing, adult height: 8-10 meters, width: 3-4 meters.

Grows well in full sun, prefers a moist, well drained soil, but will tolerate relatively wet or dry positions. Adaptable to varied pH values. If pruning is required, it should be carried out in late summer or early autumn, as pruning in late winter or early spring causes the tree to 'bleed' excessively.
