Atlas Oleander

(Nerium oleander `Atlas`)
2 500 Ft

It is an oleander native to the higher regions with serious winters of the Atlas Mountains, Morocco, which has a frost resistance of about minus 15 degrees! It can overwinter in sheltered places without any problems. It can be planted nicely in a garden where the fig tree never freezes. This rather assumes a hillside or hilltop location because the cold air behaves like water: always fills the deepest terrain points. If you have a garden at such high altitudes (but not too high up, the ideal altitude is between 200-300 meters!) and perhaps it is also protected by a building or a wall, you can attempt to raise a number of Mediterranean specialities, and there is a good chance that you will raise specimens of spectacular size! Naturally, the so-called heat pollution at larger settlements creates similar opportunities! For example Budapest could have a real Mediterranean atmosphere (but hundreds of other cities as well!) where the heating effect of the city results in never extreme cold!
