A thorny, perennial, deciduous shrub or tree growing to 4.5-7 m in height. It is native to north temperate regions and commonly used for hedgerows. Its winter-hardiness is extremely good. It turns into a gorgeous white flower cloud in late May or early June, while the dark red fruits with a diameter of 2 cm ripen in late August and in September, providing a very pretty sight. The fruit is eaten raw or cooked, as tea or as jam, moreover, dried can be consumed. Its soft, juicy flesh makes it an excellent dessert fruit. This sort can practically grow on every pH type of soil, either dry, moist or wet soil, and tolerates drought, moreover, it can tolerate atmospheric pollution as well. A position in full sun is best when plants are being grown for their fruit. The fruits and flowers of many hawthorns are well-known in herbal folk medicine as a heart tonic. They have a hypotensive effect as well as acting as a direct and mild heart tonic. Its wood is heavy, hard, tough and close-grained so it is excellent for making tool handles and other small items.
