HAWTHORN `AMERICAN` (CRATAEGUS AESTIVALIS): This hawthorn variety originates from the south-eastern states of the US. It can grow to a 8-10 m high bush or even to a smaller tree. It grows well both in half shadow and in sunny exposure, and is not particular about soils. Excellent frost-tolerance: up to minus 30 °C! (Zone 4) The thornapples have a pleasant aroma, sourish-sweet, 2 cm in diameter. They can be eaten fresh or processed: excellent for jam-making, and drying is also possible. Due to its healing power, it is used especially for the treatment of cardiac weaknesses and high blood pressure. We can count on a crop of about 30 kg from a fully developed tree. In the US, one litre of the jam made from this variety sells for about 18 USD. Its heavy, dense and strong wood can also be used in many ways. It is almost completely unknown in Hungary, but it is a remarkable speciality together with the other fruit producing hawthorn varieties.
