Apple: Vasalma (Iron Apple)

(Malus domestica `Vasalma`)
This plant is currently unavailable.

It is a high yielding, reddish coloured, nondescript flavoured winter apple, which was rather used as animal feed. Its special feature is that can be picked from under the leaves after had fallen from the tree because the fruit does not get frozen. It is resistant to diseases too.
It is more frequent in the Őrség region and very rare elsewhere, more exactly, that is not the same version. The Őrség variety is large, slightly flat, and red on a greenish background. Its fruit is greenish-white or white. The taste is sour, only gets slightly `tamed` by the time of spring. The fruit is large, but the tree also belongs to our largest-growing apple cultivars. When there is good harvest, it is not uncommon to gather in more than one ton of apples! Due to its plenty of harvest and good storability of fruit, it was an important fruit of the region. It was used to prepare vinegar, pálinka and was used for feeding animals. A single tree was found in the area, which was called `gentle iron apple` by the locals. This version was not sourish.
