Chinese fan palm

(Trachycarpus fortunei )
3 500 Ft

This exotic fan palm, which is native to east China, can be grown successfully in the warmer parts of Hungary too. There are 2-4-metre tall specimens in several parts of the country, which have repeatedly proved their winter-hardiness.

The plant shown in the main photo was taken in the old Garden District of Pécs. This place is not on the hillside of advantageous microclimate in Mecsek, it is situated down, in the much cooler flat area, near the fairground!

This evergreen, 33-42.5 ft tall (10-13 m) fan palm is native to central and southern China, southern Japan (Kyushu), Burma and northern India, growing up to altitude of 7,874 ft (2400 m). The almost 3.3 feet (1 m) wide, deeply split, dark green leaves sit on the 24-39-inch long (60-100 cm) petioles. This plant is dioecious, the flowers with stamens are yellow, the ones with pistils are greenish, about 0.079-0.157 inch across (2-4 mm) appear in large branched panicles up to 3 ft 3 in long, on separate trees, in spring. It is a showy solitaire or row tree, and also  a great balcony plant! This palm tree is an excellent winter-hardy cultivar, tolerating -18 °C!
