This is the endemic palm tree of Guadalupe Island that belongs to Mexico and situated in the Pacific Ocean. Unfortunately, it has come near to extinction owing to the goats which had been brought in and proliferated in large numbers. These animals like eating the edible fruits of this plant, so the natural regeneration has reduced to zero; the island`s current population of palms consists of only old specimens (about 150 years old each)! Fortunately, by these days, newer plantations outside the island of Guadalupe can be found at several locations, so the survival of the species has been ensured. By the end of the 1800s the number of goats had grown to nearly one hundred thousand (!!), but has successfully been reduced about only five thousand by today, however, this palm tree on the island remains seriously threatened!
It is a flashy fan-palm, robust-looking, with olive-green coloured foliage, raises thick trunk, can withstand a few degrees of frost and can grow in poorer soil very nicely too!
