Columnar japanese Plum Yew

(Cephalotaxus harringtonia `Fastigiata`)
This plant is currently unavailable.

Cephalotaxus harringtonia, commonly called plum yew, is a dioecious coniferous evergreen that typically grows as a shrub to 5-10 feet tall, but may be trained as a tree that could eventually rise to as many as 20-30 feet tall. Growth is slow and it often takes about 10 years for a plant to reach 4 feet tall. It is native to shaded woodland areas in Japan, north-east China and Korea. Linear, spirally-arranged, yew-like, evergreen leaves (to 1.5 inches long) appear on the V-shape patterned erect stems, many of which rise up from the base of the plant. Female flowers produce fleshy, edible, plum-like fruits (to 1 inch long). (If fruits are desired, female plants with at least one male pollinator are required for fruit production to occur.) Best grows in moist, sandy, well-drained soils in shady areas.

The sort Fastigiata is an upright columnar form that matures to 8-10 feet tall and to 3-5 feet wide. The yew-like blackish-green 2-inch-long leaves appear in bottlebrush form on the plant. Ideally suited for southern and shady gardens. Besides heat and shade tolerance, it provides a pleasant sight for eyes too!  USDA zone 6a.
