Myberry Sweet (Borealis) Honeyberry, Siberian Blueberry, Haskap

(Lonicera kamtschatica `Myberry Sweet (Borealis)`)
This plant is currently unavailable.

Honeyberries are becoming more and more popular in our country! This is no coincidence since the tastes of the newer varieties rival those of blueberries, the fruits are large, easy to be harvested and the ripening time lasts from mid-May until the end of June depending on the variety. The earliest varieties ripen even earlier than the earliest sorts of strawberries, so these are the first fruits in open air! A further advantage is that they are extremely cold-tolerant (up to minus 45 Celsius!), even the blooming flowers can withstand severe cold (some sorts up to minus 11 degrees)!

They are not picky in soils and grow well in any pH between pH 4.5 and 8.5! They resist diseases so are suitable for bio-production too! The content of antioxidants in the fruits is very high, much more than in the blueberries, they are rich in vitamins and other physiologically useful materials! It can grow and yield nicely both in sunny and a semi-shady place, but because of the hot continental summers (like we often have in Hungary!), a semi-shaded place is more favourable so as to avoid sunburning of the leaves. An important feature is that the plant does not sprout, so it will not fill the whole garden, however, the bushes are long-lived, even up to 50 years of age!

It is highly suitable for fresh consumption or making jam, but can be dried for the poor vitamin period in winter too!

It is a good idea, as the photos show the Canadian method, to shake the berries into an open umbrella upside-down.

Winter-hardiness zone is 3 (it is 2 by the Canadians!!)

The name of the sort of Myberry Sweet in America is Borealis.
