It may reach a height of 5-10 meters, and capable of producing very severe crop quantities. One of the most useful members of the large Crataegus genus, with a yellow fruit of the size of a small apple. The Mexicans use it in various ways; it is very popular either cooked or raw, in the form of a jam or processed otherwise. Its local name is `tejocote`; its pulp with sugar and chili powder gives the much-liked Mexican sweet called `rielitos`. It is one of the ingredients of the traditional, hot Mexican punch. Widely used in the canning industry and for therapeutical purposes for cardiac diseases, coughing and stomach complaints.
