 The Armenian name of Apricot Pineapple is Shalakh, but also called Yerevan. On the rocky slopes of the Caucasus, where summers are hot and dry while the winters are very cold, apricots from East Asia have been cultivated for 3000 years. It spread to the European continent from there and its Latin name Prunus armeniaca refers to it, too. Pineapple apricot is one of the most important sorts of the ones grown here, this is also the symbol of Armenia.
It produces fruit regularly and abundantly, a hardened variety, and the trees often reach 75 years of age, too! It tolerates both drought and winter frost very well! The fruit, which ripen in early July, is of large size and its weight can be even 50 grams each. The flesh is soft with dense texture, very delicate, tastes pleasant sweet with slight pineapple flavour. The fruit skin is thin, yellow with red design when ripe. This fruit is perfect for both fresh consumption and drying alike!
