Empress Tree

(Paulownia tomentosa )
This plant is currently unavailable.

It is a spreading tree with a rounded crown; its leaves are big, light-green and heart-shaped. Somewhat frost-sensitive while it is young, from the second year, however, when the trunk becomes woody, even severe winters cannot hurt it! Its wonderful, sweet-smelling, funnel-shaped, erect, lilac-pink flowers bloom in huge clusters in May. This wonderful plant is not only interesting for the ornamental gardens, but there is a huge economic potential in it too! It is able to grow at a phenomenal pace and can already reach a tallness of 4 metres in groomed, properly prepared soil by the end of the first year, and by the eighth year, the trunk has become as thick as a human waist and can be cut down. The wood is of high quality, one of the most expensive mass wood in the US! There are vast plantations there and the bigger part of the grown wood is purchased by Japan for very nice amount of money. The wood material is first-rate, joiners and carpenters are fond of it because of its lightness, beautiful colour and easy machinability. It is just a bit heavier than the balsa, but twice stronger than that! This wood material is very popular to construct Formula 1 motor boats (yes, F-1 in boats too!). The stems on a cut-down plantation can be re-sprouted until 80-90 years of age. The re-starting sprout growing from a developed root-system (if more than one, leave only one!) can grow even up to 5 metres in the first year! (We have experienced more than 4 metres in growth during a year not once but more times in our nursery!)
