D.D. Blanchard Evergreen Magnolia

(Magnolia grandiflora `D.D. Blanchard`)
3 500 Ft

This is a beautiful plant, bestseller of the nurseries in the US, which has got a great future in our country as well! In many respects, D. D. Blanchard is one of the best among several sorts of Magnolia grandiflora! It is a 8-9 m tall evergreen tree with wonderful dense foliage and pyramidal appearance, the sizes of its snow-white, fragrant blooms are of two palms, the largest flower known up to now was 30 cm in diameter!! Its leaves are shiny deep green, the underside is downy reddish-brown, and, which is significantly important, a lot of specimens planted outdoors at a number of places in Europe have tolerated a temperature of even 27 degrees below zero centigrade without any problem! Withstanding the pressure of snow is worth emphasizing, which is not good with all varieties, and some branches of our nice trees can be broken in case of heavy snowfall. Both the branches and the petioles of D. D. Blanchard are flexible so the snow can simply slide off. Even if there is snow on them, the branches will return to their original positions after snow melting, in contrast to many other sorts, where a lot of branches break off, but even in a better case, the crown opens like tuberose at spring and only serious cut-back can help to raise a dense, closed crown again. This plant is the number one, eye-catching decoration of the garden! USDA Zone 5b

Experience between February and July, 2012: In February, Siberian cold covered our valley lasting approximately a week and the daytime maximum temperature did not exceed minus 10 degrees of centigrade through several days. On the coldest nights, the temperatures were around minus 22-25 C°, all this occurred in parallel with thick cover of snow (approx. 11.7 inches). Although the specimens in the bottom of the valley became strongly frozen, this long-lasting, strong frost could not destroy our plants D. D. Blanchard. But all the specimens reshot from the 2-3-year-old twigs at spring again creating beautiful leaves by mid-summer. At the same time, our 3,5 m tall tree, which is placed 3 m higher in level, just became a little more faded in leaves, but shot vigorously in spring, and by now it has grown a lot of beautiful leaves and flowers!

(Otherwise, Magnolia grandiflora Edith Bogue, Treyveyensis (Treyveyi) and the sorts Brackens Brown Beauty, Sam`s Select, Victoria, Purpan and Ferruginea, which can be found a bit above on the hillside, proved to be  similar to withstand frost, Alta alone suffered severe damage where exposed to outdoor circumstances, but the one surrounded by taller/bigger plants had nothing wrong with either!)

In the summer of 2014 (July 11), thanks to a lot of rain, all our evergreen Magnolia trees are growing very vigorously and their blooming is also abundant!
