Oiseau Bleu (Blue Bird) Rose of Sharon

(Hibiscus syriacus `Oiseau Bleu` (syn.: Blue Bird))
This plant is currently unavailable.

Originally it was marketed as `Blue Bird`, but now `Oiseau Bleu` is the official denomination. It is the mauve-shrub with the largest and most beautiful blue tinged flowers, whose petals are coloured in violet turning into more and more dark-blue shade as nearing to the middle of the flower, and there is a white stripe around the stamens. A serious prize has also been awarded to this variety by The Royal Horticultural Society.

Thomas Jefferson (the President of the USA from 1801 to 1809) was a big fan of the different Rose Mallows and many of them were present in the garden of his house. Perhaps it was just because of him that Rose Mallow was one of the Victorian period of America`s most popular ornamental plants until the Second World War.

Its original natural habitat is in Korea, China and North-East India, but once this plant was mistakenly believed to originate from the Near East, hence the species name: syriacus.

It is South Korea`s national flower!

Its popularity was decreasing for a while, but thanks to the appearance of the new wonderful flowered varieties, it is sought-after again! It is very easy to raise, hardened, resistant, a spectacularly blooming shrub for a long time in summer, which is excellent to establish shorn or unshorn hedges as well!
