Pistacia lentiscus (Mastic)

(Pistacia lentiscus )
This plant is currently unavailable.

Growing even to 3-4 m tall, evergreen shrub or small tree. It is cultivated for its fragrant resin since ancient times on the island of Chios, in the Aegean Sea that belongs to Greece. This resin is the raw material for coatings and adhesives. The natural habitat of this plant can be found from Morocco to Israel, through the whole European Mediterranean region (the Iberian Peninsula, Riviera, Italy, Dalmatia, Albania, Greece and Turkey), but does not really leave the coastal zone. The exact origin of the word mastic may not be known, perhaps Phoenician or Greek origin but in terms of the meaning is `gritting teeth`.
